Leylandii in particular can add a large amount of height every growing season if nobody keeps on top of it. The catch with conifers is that most species will not grow back from bare brown wood. It depends on the species and on where the living green growth stops. As a general rule, cutting into bare wood on leylandii and most other conifers leaves a patch that will not regrow. Yew is the main exception and will usually re-shoot from old wood. Rather than promising a height on the phone, Daniel looks at the tree first and tells you what is realistic. Several of our reviews mention advice about conifer regrowth given before a cutting height was agreed. ### Reduction, ongoing trimming or removal If a conifer has grown so far beyond the height you want that reducing it would leave it mostly bare, removal and replanting can be the better long-term answer. We will tell you plainly if that is the case, and we can grind the stump out afterwards. - Reduction where the tree can be brought down and stay green. - Regular trimming to hold a row at the height you want. - Removal and stump grinding where reduction would not leave a healthy tree. ### Timing and wildlife Conifer rows are a favourite nesting spot. Nesting birds are legally protected, so during the nesting season the row is checked before work starts and the job is rescheduled if an active nest is found. ## Conifer Reduction, your questions answered ### Will my conifer grow back after reduction? It will keep growing from the green foliage that is left. Bare brown wood on most conifers, including leylandii, will not regrow, so we keep cuts within the green growth. ### Can you reduce a leylandii by half? Sometimes, but not always. It depends on how far the green growth goes back. Daniel will look at it and tell you honestly. ### Is this the same as hedge trimming? They overlap. Conifer reduction usually means taking significant height off taller trees or rows, while trimming keeps an established hedge in shape. ### Do you take the waste away? Yes.
