## Hedges explained, what it is and when you need it
Hedges are the job people put off for one extra season at a time, and then find they have a twenty-foot wall of leylandii that blocks the whole garden. We handle the full range: annual maintenance trims that keep a hedge tight and square, hard reductions that bring an overgrown hedge back to a manageable height and width, reshaping after years of neglect, and complete removal including the root systems.

The technical part is knowing how far each species can be cut back. Most conifers, including leylandii, will not regenerate from brown wood, cut below the green and you are left with a permanently bare face. Laurel, privet, hawthorn, beech and holly will all break from old wood and can be cut extremely hard with confidence. Getting that wrong ruins a hedge that took fifteen years to grow, which is why we talk it through before any height is agreed.

Clearance is the other half of the job. A conifer hedge produces a surprising volume of material, and it goes through the chipper as we work rather than being piled on the drive. All of it is recycled for biomass; nothing to landfill, no skip, no bags.

### Who this service is for

- Homeowners with overgrown boundaries, Hedges that have taken the light, the width of a path or a section of the garden and need bringing back under control.
- Regular maintenance customers, Annual or twice-yearly trims to keep a hedge crisp, dense and at the height you want it.
- Anyone removing a hedge entirely, Leylandii and conifer rows taken out completely, roots included, to open up a boundary or make room for a fence.
- Landlords, agents and businesses, Frontages, car park boundaries and communal areas kept tidy and clear of footways and sightlines.
## What happens if it's left

### Height becomes irreversible
A conifer hedge left to run becomes bare at the base and brown inside. Once the green shell is only at the top, reducing it to a sensible height means cutting into wood that will never green up again. At that point the only options are living with it or removing it entirely.

### Neighbour disputes and the High Hedges rules
Evergreen hedges over two metres that block a neighbour's light can be the subject of a formal High Hedges complaint to the council, with the costs and enforcement that follow. Keeping a hedge maintained avoids the whole conversation.

### Structural and boundary damage
Large hedges push fence panels out of line, lift flags and paths, take moisture and nutrients from everything planted near them, and hide the state of the boundary underneath. The longer it runs, the bigger the eventual bill.

### Mistakes we see most often

- Cutting conifers below the green growth in the hope they will fill back in; they will not.
- Trimming with blunt or domestic-grade equipment, which tears leaves and leaves a hedge looking scorched.
- Cutting during nesting season without checking, hedges are prime nesting habitat and active nests are protected by law.
- Letting the top widen out, which shades the base until the bottom of the hedge dies back completely.
## How we do it, our five-step process

- Step 1

### Free site visit
Species identified, current condition assessed, and what you actually want from the hedge established, height, width, shape or removal.

- Step 2

### Honest advice on the limit
You are told how far that species can safely be cut and what it will look like afterwards, before a height is agreed.

- Step 3

### Nesting and boundary checks
Hedges are checked for active nests in season, and boundary lines confirmed so nothing is cut that is not yours to cut.

- Step 4

### Cutting or removal
Cut to line with a slight batter so the base keeps its light, or removed completely with the stumps ground out where required.

- Step 5

### Chipped and cleared
All clippings chipped on site and recycled for biomass, paths and drives swept, and the job walked with you before we leave.

## What you get out of it

### Speed
Most domestic hedges are done in a day, including chipping; the drive is not buried in clippings overnight.

### A hedge that stays healthy
Cut to the green with a tapered profile so the base keeps light and the hedge stays dense from top to bottom.

### Light and space back
A reduced hedge gives back the garden, the view and the sun the old one was taking.

### No waste problem
Everything chipped on site and recycled for biomass, no skip, no bags, nothing to landfill.

### Straight advice first
You are told the truth about what a species will tolerate before the cut, not after it.

### Fully insured
Public liability cover up to £5 million, details available on request, relevant when working over fences and boundaries.

## Hedges in detail

### Species and how hard each can be cut
Leylandii and other cypress will regenerate readily from green growth and not at all from brown. Reductions in height are almost always possible because the top is green; hard reductions in width often are not, once the sides have gone bare. Yew is the exception among conifers; it will break from old wood and can be cut back extremely hard.

Laurel, privet, hawthorn, blackthorn, holly, beech and hornbeam all respond well to hard pruning and can be taken back to a framework and rebuilt. Beech and hornbeam hold their brown leaves through winter and are best cut in late summer. Native mixed hedging is cut on a rotation that keeps it stock-proof and thick at the bottom.

- Leylandii and conifer trimming, topping to the green and full removal
- Laurel, privet, hawthorn, holly and beech cutting and hard reduction
- Native and mixed hedge maintenance
- Reshaping and restoration of neglected hedges
- Complete hedge removal including stump grinding
- Ongoing annual and twice-yearly maintenance

### Shape, timing and keeping a hedge dense
A hedge should be cut slightly narrower at the top than the bottom. That taper, the batter, lets light reach the lower foliage, which is what keeps the base thick. Hedges cut square-sided or wider at the top gradually go bare at ground level, and by then it is a replanting job rather than a trimming one.

Formal evergreen hedges generally want two cuts a year, in early summer and again in early autumn, to stay crisp. Fast growers like leylandii benefit from the same. Deciduous hedges are usually cut once, in late summer or winter. The legally important point is nesting season: hedges are prime nesting habitat between March and August, so we check before cutting and reschedule if a nest is active.

### Hedge removal and what happens to the roots
Removing a conifer hedge is closer to a tree job than a trimming one. The stems are cut down in sections, the material is chipped, and then the decision is what to do with the stumps. Left in place they will rot slowly and make planting or fencing awkward; ground out, the ground is immediately usable for turf, a fence line or paving.

Mature hedge root systems also hold a large amount of soil moisture, so there is often a period of settlement once the hedge is gone. If you are putting a fence or a wall in afterwards, that is worth planning for, and we will flag it at the quote rather than after the event.

## Hedges, your questions answered

### Will conifers grow back if you cut them right down?
Most conifers will not regenerate from brown wood, so cutting below the green leaves them bare. Daniel will talk this through before a height is agreed, several customers have told us that advice saved their hedge.

### How much does hedge cutting cost?
There is no fixed price list, length, height, species, access and volume of waste all change the job. The site visit and written quote are free.

### How often should a hedge be cut?
Formal evergreen hedges usually want two cuts a year to stay crisp; deciduous and native hedges are generally once a year. We will tell you what yours realistically needs.

### Can you cut a hedge during nesting season?
We check it first. Active nests are legally protected, so if one is found the work is rescheduled until the birds have fledged.

### Can you remove a hedge completely?
Yes, including leylandii and conifer rows, with the stumps ground out so the ground can be turfed, planted, paved or fenced.

### Do you take the clippings away?
Yes. Everything is chipped on site as we work and recycled for biomass. Clearance is included as standard.

### How high can you cut?
There is no practical height limit; we are tree surgeons first, so a 30ft conifer hedge is ordinary work rather than an obstacle.

### Can you cut a hedge on a shared boundary?
We cut what is legally yours to cut and will discuss where the boundary sits at the site visit. Most neighbours are happier being told in advance, and it avoids problems afterwards.

### Do you do regular maintenance visits?
Yes, plenty of customers have us back on the same schedule each year. Ring or send a message and we will book it in.
