## Land Clearance explained, what it is and when you need it
Land clearance is the job that turns an unusable plot back into ground you can work with. That might be a garden nobody has touched in ten years, a strip of self-seeded sycamore and birch along a boundary, a development plot that needs clearing before survey or groundworks, or a commercial yard that has quietly disappeared under brambles.

The work itself is a mix of everything else we do: felling and dismantling the trees that have established themselves, cutting and clearing scrub and bramble, taking out hedging where it is in the way, and grinding stumps so the ground is level and workable afterwards. The order matters, clearing scrub first gives safe access to the trees, and grinding last means nothing is done twice.

Disposal is where most clearance jobs get expensive, and it is where we work differently. Everything is chipped on site and recycled for biomass. There is no fleet of skips blocking the road, no grab lorry, no landfill charges, and it is included in the price rather than added afterwards.

### Who this service is for

- Homeowners and new buyers, Gardens that have been neglected for years and need taking back to workable ground before anything else can happen.
- Developers and builders, Plots that need clearing before survey, groundworks or fencing, with vegetation removed and stumps ground out.
- Landlords and agents, Properties between tenancies where the outside space has got completely out of hand.
- Commercial sites, Yards, car park boundaries, verges and unused land where growth is restricting access, sightlines or use.
## What happens if it's left

### Self-seeded trees become removals
A sycamore seedling in a border is a two-minute job. Left five years it is a tree with a stem, a root system into the drains and a crown over the neighbour's fence, and it is a full removal with rigging and a stump to grind. Everything on an uncleared plot is on that trajectory.

### Structural and boundary damage
Scrub and self-seeded growth push fence panels over, get into walls and outbuildings, lift paving and block drains and gullies. Clearance is almost always cheaper than the repairs that follow leaving it.

### Projects stall and costs stack
Groundworks, fencing, surveys and landscaping all wait on a cleared site. Clearance handled late, in pieces, by several different contractors with separate disposal costs is significantly more expensive than one contractor clearing and chipping in one go.

### Mistakes we see most often

- Hiring skips for green waste when it can be chipped on site for a fraction of the disruption.
- Clearing vegetation in nesting season without a check, nesting birds are protected by law.
- Cutting everything to ground level and leaving the stumps, so regrowth starts immediately.
- Burning waste on site, which is often restricted, always unpopular with neighbours and completely unnecessary when a chipper is there.
## How we do it, our five-step process

- Step 1

### Free site visit and scope
The whole plot is walked, the extent of the growth assessed and access for kit and chip established. You get a clear picture of what the finished ground will look like.

- Step 2

### Checks and written quote
Protected trees, boundaries and nesting season are checked, and the work is quoted in full including clearance and disposal.

- Step 3

### Scrub and undergrowth cleared
Brambles, nettles and low growth are cut and chipped first, which makes the site safe to work and reveals what is actually there.

- Step 4

### Trees and hedging removed
Self-seeded and unwanted trees felled or dismantled depending on what is around them, and hedging taken out where it is in the way.

- Step 5

### Stumps ground and site finished
Stumps ground out where required, ground raked off and left level and usable, and the finished site walked with you.

## What you get out of it

### One contractor, one visit
Trees, scrub, hedging, stumps and disposal handled by the same crew rather than three separate bookings.

### No skips, no landfill
Everything chipped on site and recycled for biomass, no skip permits, no grab lorry, no waste transfer charges.

### Ground you can use
Left level and workable for turf, fencing, groundworks or landscaping rather than cut and abandoned.

### Speed
Working 6am to 10pm, seven days, means clearance jobs get finished rather than dragged across weeks.

### Commercial capability
We work for commercial and residential customers and have subcontracted for council contractors, including in Conservation Areas and on SSSI sites.

### Fully insured
Public liability cover up to £5 million, details available on request, and fifteen years of experience behind the method.

## Land Clearance in detail

### What a clearance job typically includes
Most plots need the same sequence in a different mix. Bramble, nettle and general undergrowth is cut and chipped first. Self-seeded saplings and established trees, usually sycamore, ash, birch, willow and elder in this region, are felled or dismantled depending on what they are near. Overgrown hedging is reduced or removed. Ivy and climbers are stripped off walls, fences and outbuildings. Stumps are ground out last, once the machine can reach them.

Where a plot is being cleared for building or fencing, the finish matters as much as the clearance: ground raked off, obstructions flagged, and stumps taken low enough that nothing is left to rot under a base or a post line.

- Overgrown and neglected domestic gardens
- Development plots and building sites
- Self-seeded scrub, saplings and bramble clearance
- Boundary, verge and fence-line clearance
- Commercial yards, car parks and unused land
- Stump grinding to leave workable, level ground

### Residential versus commercial clearance
Domestic clearance is generally about recovering a garden: a new owner who has inherited a jungle, a property that has been empty, or a long garden where the back third was given up on years ago. The priorities are boundaries, access, light and leaving the ground ready for turf or planting.

Commercial and site clearance is driven by the programme. Agreed working hours, clear access for other trades, insurance details in advance and a site left safe and open. We have subcontracted for council contractors and worked on sites with Conservation Area and SSSI designations, where constraints are set out before anyone starts and sticking to them is the job.

### Waste, wildlife and the law
Chipping on site is the single biggest practical difference on a clearance job. A large plot generates an enormous volume of green material, and moving it as chip rather than as brash cuts the vehicle movements dramatically. All of it is recycled for biomass; nothing to landfill, and it is included as standard rather than a separate disposal line.

Two legal constraints shape the timing. Nesting birds are protected between roughly March and August, so dense scrub and hedging are checked before work and rescheduled if active nests are present. Protected trees, TPO or Conservation Area, need consent before any work, and we check and submit those applications in-house. On plots where invasive species such as Japanese knotweed are present, that is a specialist notifiable matter and we will tell you plainly that it needs separate treatment rather than clearing it and spreading the problem.

## Land Clearance, your questions answered

### Do you work for businesses as well as homeowners?
Yes. We work for local commercial and residential customers, and have subcontracted for council contractors including work in Conservation Areas and SSSIs.

### How much does land clearance cost?
It is quoted per site, area, density of growth, number of trees, access and stump work all change it. There is no fixed price list and the site visit and written quote are free.

### What happens to all the waste?
It is chipped where it stands and recycled for biomass. Nothing goes to landfill, there are no skips to hire and clearance is included as standard.

### How long does clearing a plot take?
A neglected domestic garden is often one to two days. Larger plots and development sites are quoted with a realistic duration before you commit.

### Do you grind the stumps as part of it?
If you want the ground usable, yes, stumps are ground out so you can turf, fence, pave or build without working around them.

### Can you clear at any time of year?
Mostly, but nesting season is the exception. Dense scrub and hedging are checked first and the work rescheduled where an active nest is found.

### Are there trees on the plot you can't touch?
Possibly. Trees with a TPO or inside a Conservation Area need consent first. We check that before quoting and submit the application in-house.

### Will heavy machinery damage the site?
Access is planned at the site visit, boards are used on soft ground, and the method is chosen to suit the plot. Any unavoidable disturbance is flagged before work starts.

### Can you clear around buildings, fences and services?
Yes. Work close to structures and boundaries is done by hand and small machine where needed rather than by pushing everything through with a digger.
