## Large Trees explained, what it is and when you need it
Large tree work is where experience stops being a talking point and starts being the whole job. A 70ft conifer next to a semi, a mature ash overhanging two gardens or a row of poplars along a boundary cannot be felled; there is nowhere for them to go. They have to be taken apart from the top, section by section, with every heavy piece lowered on rope rather than allowed to fall.

This is the work DW Treecare specialises in, and it is the reason customers ring us after being told a tree is too big or too close to deal with. Daniel climbs, rigs and runs the job himself, with the regular two lads on the ground and an additional qualified climber brought in when the size of the tree justifies a second person in the canopy. Fifteen years in, there has not yet been a tree we have had to walk away from.

Big trees also produce an enormous volume of material, brash, cordwood and stem sections that have to go somewhere. It all goes through the chipper on site and away for biomass recycling, so the garden is not left with a fortnight's worth of clearing for you to do once the noise stops.

### Who this service is for

- Homeowners with mature trees, Trees planted decades ago that have outgrown a domestic plot and now dominate the house, the garden and the neighbour's light.
- Properties with boundary conifers, Leylandii and conifer rows at 40ft and upwards that were never meant to reach that height.
- Commercial sites, Car parks, yards and access roads where a mature tree sits over vehicles, buildings or a public footway.
- Anyone told 'that's too big for us', Jobs other contractors have declined because of height, weight or proximity to a building.
## What happens if it's left

### Height multiplies everything
A limb that would bruise a lawn from ten feet will go through a conservatory roof from forty. As a tree gets taller, the energy in every falling section rises sharply, and the margin for a misjudged cut disappears. That is why big trees are dismantled rather than felled anywhere near a building.

### Wind load on an over-large crown
A mature crown behaves like a sail. Heavy, unbalanced or one-sided crowns put enormous leverage through the stem and root plate in a gale, and Merseyside gets plenty of weather off the Irish Sea. Trees that have never moved in twenty years fail in a single storm for exactly this reason.

### Root plates and saturated ground
Windthrow, the whole tree going over with the root plate lifting, is a winter problem, when the ground is soft and the crown is holding water. Once a root plate has started to lift, the tree is no longer a pruning question. It is a removal, and usually an urgent one.

### Mistakes we see most often

- Choosing a contractor on price when the job needs a climber, rigging equipment and a second qualified pair of hands.
- Asking for the top to be taken out of a large tree to 'make it safe', topping leaves a decaying stem with weak regrowth on it.
- Leaving a big tree until after the first storm of the winter rather than dealing with it in settled weather.
- Assuming a large tree in a Conservation Area can be reduced or removed without notifying the council.
## How we do it, our five-step process

- Step 1

### Free site visit and access survey
Daniel looks at the tree, the target zone, the drop and rigging points and how kit and chip can get in and out. Large-tree quoting is about access as much as height.

- Step 2

### Method and risk assessment
Before a saw is started the method is decided: climb or dismantle from the ground up, where the rigging points are, what gets lowered and in what order.

- Step 3

### Crew and permissions confirmed
An extra qualified climber is brought in where the tree warrants it, and any TPO or Conservation Area application is prepared and submitted in-house.

- Step 4

### Controlled dismantle
The crown is removed from the outside in, heavy limbs are rigged and lowered on friction, and the stem is taken down in rings sized for safe handling.

- Step 5

### Chip, clear and inspect
Everything is chipped on site and recycled, the ground is raked off, and the finished site is walked with you before we leave.

## What you get out of it

### No height limit
70ft-plus conifers, mature eucalyptus, ash, willow and poplar all handled; there is no tree too tall.

### Protection of buildings
Rigging means heavy sections land where they are put, not where gravity would have chosen.

### Right crew, right day
An additional qualified climber is brought in for larger jobs rather than making two people do a three-person dismantle.

### Light and space recovered
Removing a dominant mature tree changes a garden and the rooms behind it more than any other single job.

### One visit, fully cleared
Brash, cordwood and stem all chipped or removed the same day, recycled for biomass.

### Cover you can check
Public liability up to £5 million, details available on request, and fifteen years of this specific work behind the method.

## Large Trees in detail

### Rigging: the technique that makes big removals possible
Rigging is a rope system installed in the tree before cutting starts. A block or pulley is fixed high on a sound anchor point, a lowering line runs through it to a friction device at the base, and each heavy section is tied in before it is cut. When the cut is finished the section swings free and is lowered at a controlled speed by the groundsman rather than dropping.

It is slower than felling and it is the reason a 60ft limb can be taken off directly above a greenhouse without incident. It also spreads load properly: an anchor point chosen badly can pull a stem apart, so the assessment of which unions are sound is part of the climb, not a formality.

- Speedline and lowering systems for limbs over buildings, planting and glass
- Balanced sectioning so the stem stays stable as weight comes off
- Ground anchors and boards to protect lawns, patios and block paving
- Second climber in the canopy where the tree size calls for it

### Species we deal with most across Merseyside and West Lancashire
Leylandii and other conifers make up a large share of oversized domestic trees, often planted as a hedge in the 1980s and never managed. They are light per section but produce vast quantities of brash. Ash is everywhere in this region and dieback has made a significant proportion of it brittle, infected ash is approached differently, sometimes from a platform or by taking it down from the ground, because the timber cannot be trusted under a climber.

Poplar and willow are common on wetter sites and near watercourses in West Lancashire; both are heavy, water-laden and prone to shedding limbs. Eucalyptus grows fast, gets tall quickly and has unpredictable timber. Oak, beech and lime turn up as genuine mature specimens on older Liverpool and Ormskirk plots, where the usual answer is sensitive reduction rather than removal, and we will say so.

### When a large tree should be reduced instead of removed
Not every oversized tree needs to go. A crown reduction takes height and spread off, reduces wind load and brings light back while keeping a tree that took forty years to grow. On sound, well-formed specimens that is usually the better answer, and it is cheaper.

Removal becomes the right call when there is significant decay in the stem or root plate, when the species will not tolerate the amount of reduction needed, when roots are damaging a structure, or when the tree is simply in the wrong place for the plot. The free site visit exists to make that distinction honestly rather than selling the bigger job by default.

## Large Trees, your questions answered

### Is there a size of tree you won't take on?
No. No job too small, no tree too tall; we have removed 70ft-plus trees beside houses and bring in an extra qualified climber when the size of the job calls for it.

### How much does large tree removal cost?
It is quoted per tree, because height, species, access and what sits underneath change the method completely. The site visit and written quote are free and there is no obligation.

### Will my lawn and patio survive it?
That is the point of rigging. Sections are lowered rather than dropped, boards are used on soft ground, and customers regularly comment that the grass came through untouched.

### How long will a large removal take?
Anything from a full day to two or three days depending on height, access and volume of material. You will be told the expected duration before you book, not on the morning.

### Do you need a crane or access platform?
Most large trees in this region are dismantled by climbing and rigging, which is usually faster and far less disruptive on a domestic site. Where a different method suits the tree better, that is discussed at the quote stage.

### Can you work if the tree overhangs my neighbour's garden?
Yes, and it is very common. We agree access and drop zones in advance and keep the neighbour informed, which avoids most of the friction these jobs can cause.

### Is my tree protected?
We check for a Tree Preservation Order or Conservation Area designation before quoting, and handle the council application in-house where consent is needed.

### What happens to a tree that size once it's down?
All of it is chipped on site and recycled for biomass. Cordwood can be left cut to length for a log burner if you want it, otherwise it goes with us.

### Are you qualified for this kind of work?
Daniel studied arboriculture at Myerscough College, holds City & Guilds Level 3 in Arboriculture plus all relevant certificates held by Daniel and the team members, and has fifteen years in the trade including freelance climbing for larger companies.
