Grinding removes it mechanically: a rotating cutting wheel with tungsten teeth works across the stump and the main root flare, reducing the wood to chippings and taking the level well below the surface so the ground can be made good. It is a far better answer than digging a stump out. Excavation means machinery, a large hole, broken services in some cases and a heap of soil and root to dispose of. Grinding leaves the surrounding ground largely intact, which matters when the stump sits in a lawn, against a wall or next to a patio you would rather not lift. We grind stumps as part of a removal on the same visit, and we also take standalone jobs on stumps other contractors left behind, sometimes years earlier. Left alone, one removed tree becomes a thicket of stems, and controlling that is an annual job forever until the stump is dealt with properly. ### Decay fungi and honey fungus A large dead stump is a food source sitting in your garden. Some decay fungi, honey fungus in particular, can spread from a stump's root system to living plants nearby. Removing the bulk of the wood removes most of the fuel. ### Trip hazards and blocked plans Stumps catch mower blades, wreck strimmer heads and trip people, and they stop you turfing, paving, fencing or building over the spot. For re-turfing or general lawn, grinding a few inches below surface level and topping with soil is usually sufficient: grass roots are shallow. For planting a new tree or shrub in the same position you want considerably more depth and the grindings removed, because a void full of decaying woodchip is a poor rooting medium and locks up nitrogen as it breaks down. For paving, decking, a shed base or a fence post line, the stump needs taking down far enough that no residual wood is left under the structure to rot and settle. That is discussed at the site visit, because grinding deeper takes longer and there is no point paying for depth you do not need. - Single stumps and full hedge lines - Grinding below ground level for turf, planting, paving or fencing - Root flare and surface root grinding where they lift a lawn or path - Grindings backfilled and levelled, or removed and the void topped with soil - Standalone jobs on stumps left by other contractors - Booked alongside a tree or hedge removal on the same visit ### Access, machinery and awkward sites Access is the single biggest variable in stump work. A front-garden stump next to a driveway is straightforward. A stump at the bottom of a terraced garden behind a locked gate, up three steps and past a greenhouse, is a different proposition. We check that at the free visit and bring machinery that fits through standard gateways wherever possible. Some sites are genuinely limited, narrow side passages, raised gardens with no ramped access, stumps hard against a wall where the cutting wheel cannot reach one side. We will tell you at the quote stage exactly what can and cannot be achieved rather than turning up and discovering it in front of you. ### What to do with the grindings Grinding produces a surprising volume of material, roughly double the apparent size of the stump, because the wood expands as it is cut. Backfilling is the simplest option: the grindings go back into the void, are trodden and raked level, and settle over the following months. Expect some slumping and top it up once. If you are laying turf or paving straight away, the grindings should come out and clean topsoil go in instead. Woodchip continues to decompose, which causes settlement and temporarily reduces the nitrogen available to new grass. Grindings do make good mulch for beds and paths elsewhere in the garden, and plenty of customers keep them for that. ## Stump Grinding, your questions answered ### Can you get the machine into my back garden?
