## Crown Thinning explained, what it is and when you need it
Crown thinning removes a proportion of the smaller, inner branches from a tree's crown. The outline of the tree stays the same, but the canopy becomes less dense, so more light reaches the garden and wind can pass through rather than push against it.

Done properly, thinning is a selective job. Crossing, rubbing, weak and dead branches are taken out first, and growth is removed evenly through the crown rather than stripped from the inside, which is a common mistake known as lion-tailing.

Daniel will tell you honestly whether thinning is the right answer for your tree, or whether a reduction, crown lift or no work at all would suit it better.

### Who this service is for

- Shaded gardens, where a healthy tree has become so dense that the lawn and windows underneath get little light.
- Exposed trees, with heavy crowns that catch the wind near houses, roads or boundaries.
- Mature specimen trees, that you want to keep at their full size and shape while making them lighter.
## What happens if it's left

### Over-thinning stresses the tree
Taking too much from the crown at once can trigger stress growth and leave the tree weaker.

### Lion-tailing
Stripping inner growth and leaving foliage only at branch tips makes limbs more likely to fail in wind.

### Poor cuts let decay in
Cuts in the wrong place or torn bark leave wounds the tree struggles to seal.

### Mistakes we see most often

- Removing all inner growth and leaving tufts at the ends of branches.
- Thinning far more than the tree can tolerate in one go.
- Cutting flush to the trunk rather than at the branch collar.
- Thinning a protected tree without checking TPO or Conservation Area status.
## How we do it, our five-step process

- Step 1

### Free site visit
Daniel looks at the species, health and structure and talks through what you want to achieve.

- Step 2

### Specify the work
We agree what proportion is thinned and what is removed first: dead, crossing and weak branches.

- Step 3

### Permissions
TPO and Conservation Area status is checked, and any application handled in-house.

- Step 4

### Selective climbing work
A qualified climber thins evenly through the crown, making correct pruning cuts to BS 3998.

- Step 5

### Chip and clear
Brash is chipped on site and recycled, and the area is left clean.

## What you get out of it

### Qualified crew
City & Guilds Level 3 Arboriculture, plus all relevant certificates held by Daniel and the team members.

### Work to BS 3998
Pruning carried out to British Standard 3998 by qualified operatives.

### Site left clean
Everything we cut is chipped on site and recycled for biomass. Nothing goes to landfill and removal is included.

### Fully insured
Public liability cover up to £5 million, details available on request.

## Crown Thinning in detail

### What crown thinning does and does not do
Thinning makes a crown less dense. It does not make a tree smaller or shorter. If the problem is that a tree is too tall or too wide for its space, a crown reduction is the usual answer. If the problem is low branches over a path or drive, a crown lift is.

Because thinning keeps the natural outline, it is often the gentlest way to bring light into a garden while keeping a much-loved tree looking like itself.

### How much should be thinned?
The amount depends on the species, age and vigour of the tree. A modest, evenly spread thin is usually better for the tree than a heavy one. Daniel will specify the work before it starts so you know exactly what is being taken out.

### Combining thinning with other work
Thinning is often carried out alongside other pruning in the same visit.

- Removing deadwood from the crown.
- Crown lifting over lawns, paths and drives.
- Cutting back from buildings, roofs and gutters.

## Crown Thinning, your questions answered

### Will crown thinning make my tree smaller?
No. Thinning keeps the size and shape and reduces density. If you need the tree smaller, a crown reduction is the right job.

### Does thinning harm the tree?
Not when done correctly. Selective, moderate thinning with proper cuts is a standard arboricultural operation.

### When is the best time to thin a tree?
It depends on the species. Daniel will advise on timing, and nesting birds are checked for during the season.

### Will more light reach my garden?
That is usually the main benefit. Light filters through the thinner canopy rather than being blocked.

### How much will it cost?
There is no fixed price list because every tree is different. Daniel comes out, looks at the job and gives you a free written quote with no obligation.

### What if my tree has a Tree Preservation Order?
We check TPO and Conservation Area status before any work and prepare and submit the application to the council in-house.

### Which areas do you cover?
Knowsley, Liverpool, St Helens and West Lancashire, including Widnes, Ormskirk, Skelmersdale, Maghull and Scarisbrick.
